Shoji Room Dividers

Shoji Room Dividers

We’re the UK’s best Japanese Room Dividers (Screens) manufacturer- based in Nottingham, we fit these all over the UK. They’re all bespoke and are usually about half the cost of traditional Japanese Shoji Screens, employing an artificial ‘paper’ that is actually a strong fabric made to resemble Japanese ‘Washi’ paper. Needless to say, many clients opt for a ‘non-Japanese’ look for the ultimate in contemporary minimalism but using fabrics from famous textile designers. They are often called ‘Shoji’ screens, which is their original name (more Japanese Screens elsewhere on this site under the ‘Shoji’ name!) Japanese Room Dividers were actually invented in China although the Japanese took them to the next level- these days they can be incredibly sophisticated, although the Japanese tend to stick with ‘Washi’ paper rather than use fabrics as in the UK- where we frequently use Indian and Chinese silks, French Linens, printed cottons and polyesters as well as complex embroidered fabrics! Our Japanese clients usually go for ‘Tranquil’ on their screens, an imitation ‘Washi’ paper that is actually a strong ‘spun’ polyester fabric- the beauty of the white (or beige) ‘cloudy’ effect without the weakness. Our Japanese Screens are usually mounted by velcro on a panel blind headrail- they are made from ‘Obeche’ timber, almost the lightest weight wood on the planet (it’s one-quarter the weight of Oak!), which has a beautiful grain. Before we use it, it has been air-dried in Valencia in Spain (no kiln-drying!) to keep it incredibly stable and there are 7 stock colours- stains and black of course. We can hand-paint the timber to any colour too. The Room Divider panels can be removed in seconds and many fabrics are very easily cleaned- ‘Tranquil’ can be wiped easily with a wet cloth to remove water-based stains (wine splashes?). They slide with just a fingertip touch, stacking one-in-front of the other at one or both sides. We’ve made them for several TV programmes, including a flower display at the Chelsea Flower Show- as a surround for a Japanese ‘Tokonoma’.  Japanese Room Dividers are an incredibly easy way of dividing a room without costing a fortune. We can hand paint or print your Japanese Screens of course- Call us now for a quote on 0115 9674477.
